Breast Implants and Mammograms

breast implants and Mammograms san diegoA lot of rumors float around in the cosmetic surgery world.  It is our job to make sure that patients making such important decisions as having surgery really understand the differences between real risks and wive’s tales.  Among many of the questions I get on a regular basis is “can I get a mammogram if I have implants”?   Many women have heard from friends that you either can’t get a mammogram or that it will cause your implants to burst.

Having a regular mammogram is one of the most important things you can do for yourself as a woman to ensure your breast health.   Dr. Pollack is a reconstructive surgeon and is an advocate for pro-active breast care.  All patients receiving implants should understand that while there is a very small risk of rupture, there is no reason that implants should impair your ability to have regular testing done.  Most radiology centers are equipped to take extra views of the breast so that the implants do not obstruct the view of the breast tissue in any way.  Mammography technicians are well trained to handle women with implants and they always ask about your surgical history prior to the exam.

“I have had implants for over 20 years and have had about 6 mammograms so far.  I have never had a problem with a technician, the equipment, or the exam”. Jennifer – patient

So yes, you can and should get regular mammograms when you have breast implants.  Always make sure to speak openly to your mammography technician and be open about any discomfort you feel.
