Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation, or breast enlargement, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. Many women feel out of proportion or physically unbalanced due to small breasts, and breast augmentation can improve their appearance and body image.

The breast augmentation procedure usually lasts about one hour, and is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Most patients can return to work within a week, and can resume light exercise in 2 to 3 weeks. Full recovery takes four to six weeks.

Both saline and silicone implants are available. Silicone implant will have a softer feel and a more natural appearance, and were approved last year for use in breast augmentation. There are three different breast implant shapes for different breast types and desired appearance.

We perform breast augmentation through one of two incisions: under the breast near the breast crease, or along the bottom of the areola. The implants are placed beneath the pectoralis or chest muscle for a more natural appearance and to reduce the risk of hardening of the scar tissue around the implant.

Our goal is to make sure the patient is completely satisfied with her breast augmentation. When a patient says she wants to be a C or D cup, it is not always clear that the surgeon and the patient are thinking of the same look. The best way to communicate to the surgeon what size you would like is with photos. They will help clarify the size and proportion and shape you desire, and these photos will be used during the surgery to guide the choice of implant size.
