Over the course of time, the breasts change shape and sag due to factors like gravity, breastfeeding, and normal aging. A breast lift, or “mastopexy,” can provide a more attractive appearance to the breasts by reshaping and repositioning them higher on the chest. The size and position of the areolas can also be improved with this procedure. At Del Mar Plastic Surgery, Dr. Larry Pollack frequently performs breast lift surgery for women in the San Diego area.

CANDIDATES

Good candidates for the breast lift procedure are women with the some or all of the following conditions:

  • Sagging or misshapen breasts
  • Nipples that sag below the breast crease
  • Areolas that are stretched
  • Asymmetry in the breasts

PROCEDURE

A breast lift is typically done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or sedation. During surgery, Dr. Pollack will perform one of the following incision techniques:

  • Doughnut Mastopexy – An incision is made around the areola.
  • Lollipop Mastopexy – Incisions are made around the areola and down to the breast crease.
  • Anchor Mastopexy – An incision is made around the areola with incisions leading vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally underneath.

After the breasts are elevated to a more youthful position, the areolas and nipples are lifted. Excess skin and tissue are removed and the incisions are closed.

CONSULTATION

When you meet with Dr. Pollack for your initial consultation, you will discuss your goals and concerns with him in detail, and he will customize the procedure to fit your needs and desires. A breast lift is most often performed for women who are done having children and wish to improve the position and shape of their breasts. Although the shape can be improved, a breast lift will not restore size or fullness to the breasts. Women desiring to improve these aspects should consider breast augmentation in concurrence with a breast lift.

RECOVERY, RISKS, AND RESULTS

After surgery, it is best to follow Dr. Pollack’s postoperative instructions to ensure a safe and effective recovery. Following these instructions will help patients get the best results possible with the most minimal amount downtime. The breasts will be wrapped in bandages and a support bra will be worn to reduce swelling. Most patients are able to return to work about a week after surgery but should refrain from any strenuous exercise for at least three weeks.

As with any surgery, there is the risk of postoperative complications such as infection, abnormal scarring, or permanent numbness in the nipples. Following the postoperative instructions will decrease the possibility of complications after surgery

Patients are generally very satisfied with the final results of breast lift surgery. Women feel confident about themselves knowing that their breasts look more youthful and attractive.

INSURANCE

In most cases, breast lift surgery will not be covered by insurance. However, the procedure maybe covered in the case where a breast lift is combined with a breast reduction to correct problems associated with overly large breasts.
