As we age, factors such as overexposure to sun, smoking, and stress can contribute to the development of fine lines and wrinkles in our skin. Oftentimes, these can make an individual look older than they really are. Injectable fillers are becoming a very popular choice for patients who desire facial rejuvenation but do not want to undergo an invasive procedure, such as a facelift or a browlift. At Del Mar Plastic Surgery we offer a variety of FDA-approved injectable fillers that are available for patients who want to attain a youthful appearance.

CANDIDATES INCLUDE:

  • Individuals with fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Individuals with wrinkles on the corners of the mouth and chin (marionette lines)
  • Individuals with deep creases between brows and on the forehead

TYPES OF TREATMENT

Injectable fillers are performed on an outpatient basis and take just a few minutes to administer. A topical anesthetic may be applied to alleviate any discomfort during treatment. Unlike other injectables, there is no need for an allergy test to be conducted prior to treatment since these fillers are made of substances that occur naturally in the body.

Juvederm®

Juvederm® is a filler made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance made in the body. Approved by the FDA in 2006, this filler is extremely effective for adding volume and diminishing the signs of aging in the cheeks and around the mouth. Juvederm® can also be injected into the lips to improve fullness.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® has been an FDA-approved filler since 2006 and is made of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite. It is most commonly used to improve the nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and corners of the mouth), depressions in the face, and acne scars. Once Radiesse® is injected into the skin, not only does it provide immediate volume, but it also promotes the growth of new collagen.

Belotero Balance®

Belotero® is newer to the market and is made of hyaluronic acid of a thinner consistency than some other typical fillers. This makes it a fantastic option for the doctor to use on very fine lines such as crow’s feet and vertical lip lines. Dr. Pollack likes to use Belotero® in conjunction with either Botox® or Xeomin® for the best possible results around the eyes.

Restylane®

Restylane® is a popular filler that is also made of hyaluronic acid and can provide volume and fullness to the skin. Approved by the FDA in 2003, it is normally used to fill in cheek folds as well as add volume to lips.

RECOVERY, RISKS, AND RESULTS

There is little to no downtime associated with injectable fillers. After treatment, patients can immediately return to work and their other daily activities. Mild redness and minimal swelling may be present after the injections are complete, but these symptoms should subside within a few days.

Complications are rare with this type of treatment. To ensure a safe and effective outcome, it is best to choose a specialist who is experienced in administering injectable fillers.

The results of treatment are visible immediately and will continue to improve as swelling goes away. Although injectable treatments vary, fillers typically last up to a year. To maintain results, individuals should seek touch up treatments approximately every eight months.

AVERAGE COST

The cost varies widely when it comes to injectable fillers, depending which type of filler is used and how many areas are treated. On average, a single injectable treatment can cost $300 to $800.

INSURANCE

Since undergoing treatment for injectable fillers is an elective process, the procedure is not covered by insurance. However, there are special payment plans, such as CareCredit™, that can help individuals with their fees.
