San Diego Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a very common breast enhancing procedure after weight loss, pregnancy, or the effects of gravity and aging. A breast lift is often done with a breast augmentation to add lost volume and firmness.

There are three main types of breast lifts used depending on the severity of the breast drooping. A small amount of drooping can very often be treated with a breast augmentation and a small circumareolar lift, also called a “doughnut mastopexy,” leaving a scar only around the areola.

For moderate sagging, a vertical or “lollipop” mastopexy can be done, with or without a breast implant. This will provide more lifting, reduce the areola size, and leave a scar around the areola and from the areola to the bottom of the breast, leaving the scar shaped like a lollipop.

For severe drooping, a full or “anchor” mastopexy, again with or without an implant, is necessary. This will achieve all that a vertical breast lift does, but also will leave a scar underneath the breast, so the entire scar has the shape of an anchor.

The goal of the mastopexy is to lift and tighten the breast, giving it a more youthful appearance. In most cases, the breast lift scars heal as thin, light, flat scars within six to twelve months. The surgery is done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia and lasts two to three hours. Recovery is between 7 and 10 days, and full exercise can be resumed in 4 to 6 weeks.
