San Diego Eyelid Lift Surgery
Eyelid correction surgery, also called an “eyelid lift” or “Blepharoplasty”, is a very common procedure for both men and women. As we age, the eyebrows can drop and excess skin develops on both the upper and lower eyelids. Other causes of excess upper and lower eyelid skin include sun damage, allergies, and hereditary factors. In addition to excess skin, the eyelids can look puffy due to bulging of the fat that is around the eyeball, resulting in a tired or fatigued appearance.
Upper lid blepharoplasty is performed by removing a crescent-shaped piece of skin and muscle from the mid portion of the lid, leaving the resulting scar in the new eyelid crease. This makes the scar almost invisible. Through that incision, excess fat can also be removed if necessary.
Lower lid blepharoplasty can be done either through an incision along the eyelashes or through the inside of the eyelid, depending on the problem. If there is a problem with puffy eyes and bulging fat, and not much excess skin, the incision can be placed on the inside of the eyelid. To remove excess skin, an incision on the outside of the eyelid is necessary. In some cases, if there is only a small amount of excess skin, a laser can be used to tighten the skin.
For both men and women, blepharoplasty surgery can result in a younger, more energetic appearance with very little down time. Most patients have only mild bruising and swelling, and can return to work in 5 to 7 days. The surgery is usually done under twilight anesthesia, and there is very little postoperative pain.
