Immediately After Breast Augmentation Surgery
After your procedure, you will have a light dressing over your incisions and a surgical bra to support the breasts as they heal. Patients usually experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort during the early part of their recovery. Dr. Larry Pollack will prescribe pain medication to help keep you more comfortable for the first few days. Range of motion is recommended, but do not lift more than 5 pounds.
Breast Augmentation Recovery Week by Week
The recovery experience varies somewhat for each patient, but this week-by-week guide offers you a general guideline of what you might expect throughout your recovery process:
Week 1: Early Rest and Healing
The first week is usually the most uncomfortable, due to swelling and bruising around the surgical sites. Take your pain medication as prescribed, get plenty of rest, and you should start to feel much better by the end of the week. Do range-of-motion exercises regularly and walk as much as you can, but do not do other exercises.
Weeks 2–4: Improvement and Returning to Activities
Most patients are back to work and many of their regular activities during this period. However, if your job is strenuous, Dr. Pollack may advise you to stay home a bit longer to give your body plenty of time to heal. Bruising and swelling should substantially subside by now, but your breasts may still feel tight and sit high on your chest.
Weeks 4–8: Getting Back to Normal
By this time, you are likely feeling more like yourself again. You have probably resumed nearly all of your activities, including cardio and light weight workouts. Continue to avoid chest exercise until Dr. Pollack lets you know it’s okay. You will see swelling continue to subside, and breasts will soften and begin to settle into their new position.
Months 6–12: Seeing Final Results
At this point, all of your physical restrictions should be lifted, and you should be back to your routine. Swelling has fully subsided, and you will be able to see the outcome of your surgery. You can begin wearing your own bras, but be sure they offer sufficient support for your new breast size. Incisions are likely fading and may continue to do so for up to 18 months, until they are barely noticeable.
Tips to Optimize Your Recovery Experience
Throughout your breast augmentation recovery journey, you can take steps to make the healing process as safe and comfortable as possible, such as:
- Following all postoperative instructions carefully
- Resting when you feel tired and getting plenty of sleep
- Wearing your surgical bra as recommended
- Sleeping on your back with your head and shoulders elevated
- Eating healthy and staying hydrated
- Avoiding nicotine and alcohol throughout your recovery
- Walking daily to support healthy blood flow for healing
Dr. Pollack will also instruct you on caring for your incisions to minimize postoperative scarring. These instructions might include using Bio Oil or the application of a silicone gel or strips to the incisions to keep them soft, and avoiding sun exposure or tanning booths.
